Zieks WIP

Old school shoot-em-up with Speccy-style visuals

Zieks WIP
Screenshots
Zieks (which is totally not pronounced like "ZX" at all and which is therefore creative), is an olde-fashioned shoot-em-up, in the general style of pretty much every game made in the early 1980's.

Arrows move, Z shoots. Your ship instantly explodes if it gets hit even once, just like in real life. Pretty much what you'd expect.

Music is by beefok, who will eventually be enslaving most of us, I think! Many thanks to him! For the music, I mean. Although I'm sure he'll be pretty benevolent.

Note: This is a work-in-progress version that I haven't actually touched in several months -- it got shelved when I got really busy. I still am, but I now would like some feedback on it before I unshelve it in a month or two. Please let me know if my attempt to simulate the ZX Spectrum's color artifacting blows up on your machine, and more importantly, please let me know if you feel like any parts of the game so far are unbalanced or could be improved.

Latest Update

For fullscreen play: I forgot to include fullscreen.bat, but just create a new .bat file in the game's directory, containing:

And you should be good to go.

Extra! Bug that I just noticed and am too lazy to fix at the moment: Collecting the letters in B-O-N-U-S tends to only be a bonus for people that don't like the game.

Very nice game: retro-y, challenging, and very polished. Great job! I didn't know if the color artifacts were intentional but I assume they were, after having read the description. To me, they only look odd, as opposed to enhancing the game. Perhaps I'm just not a seasoned retro gamer enough

Thank you.

I will probably eventually add an option to just use regular coloration (although still very much with one-color sprites), since it seems that most people think the "attribute clash" is just annoying, even if they are familiar with it.

And I loved the color stuff. Not quite sure how you managed it, but it looks great!

Color stuff is here: socoder.net/index.php?snippet=19029 Could definitely be optimized / cleaned up so it doesn't look like I wrote it at twoin the morning while drunk*, but that is a story for another day.

I pronounce the name of the game "zeeks," actually -- but forgetting that only Americans omit the "d" at the end is how the name came about, so I cannot call myself innocent. Sorry. D:

* It was actually three in the morning.
