I'd imagine Demand may be an issue. Millions use USB readers, so economies of scale reduces the cost of manufacturing. Whereas hardly anyone would buy a cable, so the price of those is more expensive.

(I did ALevel Business Studies, dont'ya'know!)

... It's still a ludicrous price difference, though, so I imagine there's also a "tinkerer's fee" attatched, because they KNOW you really want it!!
