 		To be fair, I think this company is just patent-trolling. The patent's text is vague enough to basically apply to any markup with separation between presentation and content. MS losing this case sets a precedent that could cause major headaches for things like CSS as well.

 		Either that or they will release a patch for Word that includes their own markup language, which happens to be almost like XML but have a thousand more rules to using it, to the point where the only real use would be by using word.

Seems that's how Microsoft has done things before...

 		Microsoft can't really afford to do that, considering the existing install base and support for their current XML format. The judge wants them to not support the formats whatsoever, or to treat those formats as plaintext (e.g., you open them and you see the XML itself rather than the formatted document). So, what's going to happen is this: Microsoft will appeal the ruling (they've probably already done this); the patent will be rendered invalid because it's overly broad and really unfair to everyone, not just Microsoft; I4i will go out of business due to lawsuits, probaby; Word will be sold as usual.
