Hold it. Patients were shown images. Does this mean that the machine can only show what images are sent to the brain by the eyes, or can it actually show completely original thoughts?

They reckon in ~10 years they will have more interesting things such as reading thoughts & dreams. (Just think of the implications of that - perhaps it's only 20 years until we have telepathy!).

Considering this is really their first major experiment in the area that didn't involve cutting people's heads open, the results that they have are really impressive, I think.

Sadly all the news articles are really short or completely exaggerated (looking at you, Torygraph!) and the scientific PDF is on one of those websites where you have to pay for a membership to download it. There was a copy leaked to megaupload but I lost the link.
